Gerson Chaverra nació en las manos de una comadrona, en la escuela de Querá, una vereda de Bajo Baudó (Chocó, al noroeste del país). Años en los que su mamá, Rita Manuela Castro, era profesora y recorría la región dando clases. Y como ocurrió con otros de sus nueve hijos, aquel día los dolores del parto aparecieron entre alumnos, olor a tiza y maderas viejas.
Su peregrinaje siempre fue de largos y aventurados kilómetros. A los dos años de haber nacido Gerson, fue trasladada a corregimientos cercanos a Quibdó y hasta allá iba por días y semanas. Sus hijos crecían en la capital de Chocó, a veces muy lejos de ella.
